I'm going to try and create a dress to sell on Etsy someday.  It will probably be an original design and not based off any of my current sketches, but nonetheless I'll try my signature Civil War/Victorian style.  Would like this to be a two piece with a puffed sleeve blouse and checkered skirt over nylon or tulle and a 6 hoop crinoline, with some cute and attractive ribbons to match, but that's just an idea and probably won't match the final design.  I really need to find some necessary fabrics and a sewing machine first. XP

Learning to sew is not difficult, but I wouldn't recommend starting with a period ball gown. They take a LOT of fabric/notions and are really expensive to create. (For example: You'll need 6-12 yards of fabric for a Civil War styled gown. The low quality stuff is usually $8-$13 a yard and high quality fabric can get as expensive as you can dream of. Then you also have to buy the hoop skirt, the boning, the hooks, the ribbon, the trim, etc. It all adds up fast.)

Simple modern style skirts are a great place to start. You could also find a commercial pattern with similar style lines to the bodice you'd like to make: maybe a peasant blouse or a princess seamed top. Start with a cheap fabric like muslin to get the hang of things. If you start big, you might get frustrated and not want to continue. Starting small and working your way up will help you learn the skills to tackle something larger. =) Good luck!

Ah ok.  I still want to design something poofy, but maybe a 1950s knee length skirt might also be a good start.  Probably won't use muslin for that but maybe a fabric that's cute and cheap enough.

I dunno, what fabric would you recommend for a twirlable fifties skirt worn by a high school girl or young 20-something? XDD

If you want to go fifties, try a circle skirt. There's a lot of tutorials out there for them. (Lots of blogs with photos and a ton of videos on Youtube!) Definitely start with cotton though- it's the best fabric for beginners. Doesn't necessarily have to be muslin (which is 100% cotton,) but a cotton will make learning much easier! It doesn't fray too much and won't slip and slide as you're trying to mark and cut.

I haven't! I'm in the middle of working on a musical so I'm holding off until my Thanksgiving break. One of my professors keeps mentioning it though so I can't wait to start! =D

Happy belated!

Ah you live in Michigan, huh?  I've been vacationing northwest of that state in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, but now I must get ready to leave.  I'll miss Oshkosh! :(
