Beauty and the Beast Ball Gown

Description

I was commissioned by a theater to design and build their ballgown for Beauty and the Beast. There were two girls cast as Belle so the bodice is a corset to accommodate both of their sizes. (See the detail shots below for a picture of the back.) I'll try and get performance pictures posted since the bodice doesn't look that great on my dress form. The dress took several weeks to draft and build and turned out almost identical to my design!

The detail shots give a much better idea of the construction but an overview:
Skirt: Bottom is a sparkly satin and has a 300 inch hem. (Spins beautifully!) The overlay is gathered organza. Pattern completely drafted by me.
Bodice: Fully boned with flat steel corset bones. Material is the same silk as the skirt with an overlay of gold lace. Has a lace up back with professionally set grommets and a front zipper for quick change purposes. Started with a bodice pattern which I used to draft a new pattern based on the measurements of the girls.
Underneath: Under the gown is a five-hoop skirt and a petticoat to add fullness. The girls also wore ivory gloves, a pearl necklace, and a flower hairpiece. (Unfortunately, a wig wasn't used.)

I kept a photo diary of the building process from design to completion over on Tumblr: caliypsoe.tumblr.com/tagged/be…
